Creating Healthy Environments for Youth
Promoting Healthy Eating in Recreational Facilities

Project Highlights

Program Goals

The purpose of this coalition is to help create an environment that promotes and supports healthy eating in arenas. Arenas have been targeted because they include one of the largest populations of youth outside of school. At the same time the arena is the cornerstone of many communities with people of all ages visiting as participants and spectators.

Creating Healthy Environments for Youth Coalition

Creating Healthy Environments for Youth is an initiative of the DurhamLives! Coalition. The partners involved include: Durham Region Health Department, Canadian Cancer Society, Canadian Diabetes Association, Canadian Liver Foundation, Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario, Ontario Recreation Facilities Association Inc., Durham Region recreational facilities and Food Sense Vending Machine Services.

Healthy Eating in Arenas Pilot Report, 2008

As a follow-up to the Survey Report, Creating Healthy Environments for Youth implemented a Healthy Eating in Arenas Pilot Project from September 2006 to April 2008. This project was intended to introduce healthier food choices in arena concession menus and implement strategies to encourage sales of these items. Sales data was collected and analized and the results can be found in the Pilot Report.

Arena Survey Report, 2005

The Creating Healthy Environments For Youth coalition implemented a survey on healthy eating throughout arenas across Durham Region. The purpose of the survey was to identify the foods that arena patrons were purchasing from concessions, the healthy food choices they would like to see available and the price they would be willing to pay for the healthy food choices. Survey results showed strong support for the inclusion of healthy food choices in arenas.

Promoting Healthy Eating in Recreational Facilities

Five arenas within five different municipalities are participating in the Healthy Eating in Arenas Project to implement healthier food choices in their concessions.
